Trestle's last lift has run and the valley goes quiet
Trestle Bike Park ran its final lift-served day of the year on September 27, so the downhill trails above town are closed for the season. This is the in-between stretch we warn people about. The bike park is done, the ski lifts do not spin again until late October at the earliest, and last season did not open until October 31. Fewer lift-served options, a lot more elbow room everywhere else.
The week starts wet. The forecast calls for rain showers and thunderstorms Monday through Wednesday with highs of only 57 to 60, close to ten degrees under the usual September high here, and Wednesday night dropping to around 32. Then it flips. Thursday through Sunday read sunny to mostly sunny with highs climbing from 60 to 66, which makes for a bright, dry first weekend of October.
Plan around that second half. Mid September to mid October is one of the good windows on the Fraser, a Colorado Gold Medal fly fishery that runs low and clear this time of year. The gauge at Winter Park read 6.60 cubic feet per second on September 28 at 6am. Mornings in the low 30s mean waders and a warm layer, not shorts.
One thing on the calendar, and a good one if you have kids along. The Grand Park Community Recreation Center in Fraser holds its Fall Open House on Saturday, October 3, from 9am to 1pm, with swimming, climbing, gymnastics, and crafts. It is free for members and $10 for everyone else. Go in the morning, then spend the afternoon outside while the sun holds.
