Elk bugling season on the west side of the park
Mid September through mid October is when the elk rut runs on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, and it is the same stretch that turns the aspens gold. The Grand Lake entrance is about 33 miles from us, roughly 50 minutes up the road. Bugling carries best at dusk and dawn, which is the whole reason to make the drive at an odd hour.
Aspen color, checked September 21: the valley around Fraser and Winter Park is at or near peak this week, the Kawuneeche Valley toward Grand Lake should hold to about October 1, and the passes above 9,500 feet have mostly turned. A dry summer ran the season about a week early.
One thing to know before you go. From September 1 through October 31 the park closes five meadow areas, Harbison Meadow and Holzwarth Meadow among them, to foot travel off the established roads and designated trails between 5pm and 10am daily. Fishing in those sections of river closes from 5pm to 7am. That is exactly the window you want to be out listening, so plan on staying on the road or a marked trail instead of wandering into a meadow.
Trail Ridge Road was open to through travel Monday morning, and timed entry reservations are required to enter the park between 9am and 2pm. A late afternoon drive up for dusk lands outside that window. If you want the middle of the day for the aspens instead, book the reservation at go.nps.gov/romo/timedentry.
The forecast calls for highs of 63 to 69 through Friday and overnight lows of 36 to 38, right about the normal September high here with nights running a few degrees mild, plus a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms Tuesday onward. Bring a warm layer for the drive home.
