Summer ยท Weekend itinerary
The Hike Weekend
One easy lakeside day, one honest climb, and a cabin that lets you start early without a two-hour drive first. Byers Peak is the mountain you look at from the patio, and it is also the mountain you can be standing on top of before most people have had breakfast. Bring boots that are already broken in.
๐ Friday: land softly, plan properly
4:30โ5:00 PM
๐ In the door
Check-in is after 4:00 PM, keypad entry, self check-in. Boots and packs go to the entry. Bags to the loft. Then go stand on the patio and look southwest, because that is Byers Peak and you are going up it on Sunday.
5:00โ5:30 PM
๐ Trail food run
Safeway in Fraser is under a mile away, under 5 minutes, with a deli, open 6 am to 11 pm. Buy for two packed trail lunches, two big breakfasts, and Friday dinner on the grill. Buy twice the water you would at sea level.
5:45โ6:45 PM
๐ถ Loosen the legs, do not test them
An easy flat hour on the Fraser River Trail, paved and gentle, running 13.6 miles through the valley. Or just walk the lot the cabin sits on, through the aspens and pines, which takes less time and works nearly as well. The goal Friday is circulation, not fitness.
7:00โ8:15 PM
๐ฅ Grill night and A-Frame setup
I would actually cook Friday. Fire in the stove or the firepit, music on, drinks poured, table set for six. Go easy on the drinks tonight. Standard mountain advice is to drink two to three times your normal water and take it light on alcohol the first day or two, and Sunday will collect on any debt you run up now.
8:15โ9:30 PM
๐บ Map night
Spread it out on the table and actually decide. Then pack packs and leave them by the door.
- Layers, rain shell, headlamp, first aid, more food than the hike needs.
- Bottles filled tonight and in the fridge.
- Boots and poles staged in the entry.
- Screenshot your map. Cell coverage drops fast once you leave the highway.
๐ Saturday: Monarch Lake, and nowhere else to be
6:30โ7:15 AM
โ Real breakfast
Pod coffee, eggs, out the door with lunch already made. Afternoon thunderstorms are a genuine summer pattern up here, and the whole reason to start early is so you are walking back to the car when the sky starts thinking about it.
7:15โ8:15 AM
๐ West and then east
Granby is 25 to 30 minutes down the valley, and Monarch Lake sits east of there in the Arapaho National Recreation Area. The last stretch is dirt road. Take it slow, it is part of the day.
8:15โ11:15 AM
๐ฅพ The Monarch Lake Loop
About 4 miles, easy, water on your left the whole way, and a wall of the Indian Peaks standing over the far end of it. This is the rare hike that is genuinely pleasant for a mixed group: kids can do it, and nobody with strong opinions about mileage will feel cheated by the scenery.
The trailhead is also a gateway into the Indian Peaks Wilderness, so if the group has legs left, keep going past the loop and turn around whenever the mood shifts.
11:15 AMโ12:15 PM
๐ฅช Lunch on a rock
The one you packed. Eat it by the water with your boots off. No restaurant is going to beat this and you are not dressed for one anyway.
12:15โ1:30 PM
๐ Back up the valley
Granby to Fraser is that same 25 to 30 minutes. Somebody will fall asleep. That is a sign of a correctly executed morning.
1:30โ4:30 PM
๐ช The patio block
This is where I would not schedule anything. Raised patio, book, feet up, laundry running so tomorrow starts in clean socks. If the sky opens up, that is the wood stove's cue and you are already home.
5:00โ6:00 PM
๐ง Do tomorrow's work tonight
Sunday's hike starts before checkout, so the car gets packed now. Everything except toothbrushes and breakfast goes in tonight. Set out clothes. Fill bottles. Set the alarm and do not negotiate with it in the morning.
6:30โ8:30 PM
๐ฅฉ Saturday is the night you go out
The Ranch House Restaurant and Saloon at Devil's Thumb Ranch is about 5 miles out, 10 to 15 minutes, open to the public, serving ranch-raised Wagyu in a 1930s homestead building. It is the nicest room in this itinerary and it will still let you in wearing hiking pants. Alternative: Tabernash Tavern, a New American room and wine bar since 2008, known for prime dry-aged steaks.
8:45โ9:45 PM
๐ฅ Short firepit, early bed
Twenty minutes outside, then in. You have a 5:45 alarm. Also, this is moose country, so if something large is standing between you and the firepit, the firepit can wait.
โฐ Sunday: up early, up high, home by four
5:45โ6:30 AM
โ Coffee and out
Coffee, something fast to eat, last sweep of the loft, and the door locked behind you. You packed the car last night, which means you are effectively checked out before you leave and nothing is waiting on you at ten.
6:30โ7:15 AM
๐ Into the Experimental Forest
From Fraser, County Road 73 southwest to Forest Road 160 into the Fraser Experimental Forest, then right on Forest Road 164 to the trailhead. Worth knowing: that access road is closed to motor vehicles between November 15 and June 15, which is why this is a summer itinerary.
7:15โ11:30 AM
๐ฅพ Byers Peak
From the upper trailhead it is roughly 1.8 miles to the summit, and it is steep, with some bouldering required near the top. It is short on paper and long in the legs. Turn around without shame if the weather changes; the peak is not going anywhere and neither, ideally, are you.
Two other verified options if Byers is not the day you want:
- St. Louis Lake Trail, off the same County Road 73 nine miles southwest of Fraser: 3 miles from the trailhead to the start of the trail, then 3 more to the lake, climbing from 10,315 feet to 11,591. A long, steady, beautiful grind.
- Columbine Lake Trail from the Junco Lake Trailhead, north on US 40 then east on County Road 83 and 11 miles up County Road 84. Steep and rocky in sections, with the lake at 11,060 feet. There is a parking fee at the trailhead.
12:00โ1:30 PM
๐ฒ You have earned a real lunch
Fontenot's Fresh Seafood and Grill in Winter Park has been doing Cajun and Gulf cooking since 1990, and a bowl of gumbo after four hours of vertical is a genuinely excellent decision. Alternative: Sharky's Eatery in Fraser, breakfast and lunch, hearty and southwestern and closer to the trailhead.
1:45โ3:15 PM
โ One last sit-down
Grand County Roastery on Zerex Street in Fraser roasts in house and is open every day, 6 am to 6 pm. Coffee for the road, and a bag of beans so that next Tuesday morning in your own kitchen reminds you of this.
3:15โ4:00 PM
โฝ Fill up and go
Gas at the Sinclair on Market Street, bottles topped off, boots in the trunk instead of on the seat. Out by four so the drive home stays sane. Denver is about 71 miles and roughly an hour and a half when the road is kind.
