The drive to the park's west side, no reservation needed
Rocky Mountain National Park's timed entry reservations are done for the season, so the drive to the Grand Lake entrance no longer needs one. The park required them daily from May 22 through October 12, and the Bear Lake Road version ran a week longer, through October 18. From Fraser it is about 33 miles and roughly 50 minutes, north on Highway 40 to Granby and then east on Highway 34.
We will be straight with you about the color. Gold on the park's west side runs mid September to mid October, so this week sits at the tail end of that window rather than the middle of it. What you get instead is the quiet version of the drive, with no 9am to 2pm reservation rule to plan around.
Go early in the week if you can. The forecast calls for highs near 61 Monday, 59 Tuesday, and 64 Wednesday, all of them above the October average high of 54.9, with rain showers likely Thursday. Then it flips: a chance of rain and snow showers Friday night and snow showers Saturday, with overnight lows near 24 and 23. Trail Ridge Road was listed as open to through travel on the park's roads page, last updated October 6, and the park says plainly that it does not post road status on its website, so call the recorded status line before you count on driving over the top.
None of this is a ski week yet. Winter Park Resort is still reporting a zero inch base with no opening date set, so a park drive while the days are mild and the wood stove going when Friday turns is the honest plan.
