The Snow Weekend, No Skiing Required

🔑 In the door

Check-in is after 4:00 PM, keypad entry, no handoff. Snow gear goes straight to the entry. Wood stove lit immediately, because it is the slowest thing in the house to get going and the best thing in the house once it does.

🛒 One trip to Safeway

Under a mile from the cabin, under 5 minutes, open 6 am to 11 pm. Buy for three meals at the cabin plus snacks, and buy more water than feels reasonable. Fraser sits around 8,600 to 8,800 feet and it is dry up here.

🔥 A-Frame setup

Fire going, music on, drinks poured, gear in the entry, lights low. Do not skip this to save twenty minutes. The whole point of the weekend is that the cabin feels like this every time you walk back into it.

🍲 Cook Friday night

I would actually cook. Table seats six, kitchen has everything, and you have somewhere to be at eight. Chili, pasta, whatever holds. Do not immediately go to dinner in town on your first night.

🛷 Night session at the tubing hill

Fraser Tubing Hill is in town, under a mile from the cabin, family owned since 1971, open 7 days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. through the winter, conditions permitting. Rental sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. Going at night is the move: fewer people, better lights, and adults stop pretending they are only there for the kids.

• Waterproof everything. You will end up sitting in snow.
• Bring your own thermos. Assume nothing is sold on site.

🪵 Dry out

Wet layers into the dryer, boots into the entry, everyone back around the stove. Lay tomorrow's clothes out now, fill the water bottles, set one alarm for the whole house.

☕ Breakfast at the table

Pod coffee, big breakfast, no restaurant wait. You have a booked activity and a hard start time, which is the only thing this weekend is strict about.

🛷 Eighty huskies

Dog Sled Rides of Winter Park runs out of Fraser with a kennel of 80 huskies and a 45 minute winter sled ride. It is quieter than you expect once the team settles into a rhythm, and it is the thing everyone in the car talks about on the way home. Book ahead; these fill.

☕ Real coffee, sitting down

Grand County Roastery on Zerex Street in Fraser roasts its own beans in house and is open every day, 6 am to 6 pm. Fifteen minutes in a warm room between two cold activities is a legitimate itinerary item.

🍜 Lunch back at the cabin

Leftovers, soup, grilled cheese. You are about to be outside for three hours and you do not want to do that on a restaurant lunch.

🏍 Snowmobiles on the Divide

Grand Adventures runs its Fraser Valley Trailblazer tours out of Colorado Adventure Park on County Road 721, right here in Fraser. Tours come in 1 hour, 1.5 hour with a kids course, 2 hour, and 3 hour lengths, and they run November through April. Their own advice is worth repeating: plan on three hours total for a two hour tour once check-in and gear are counted.

Take the 2 hour. The 1 hour ends right as you stop white-knuckling the throttle.

🚿 Cabin reset

Showers, dry layers, stove restocked, everyone horizontal for an hour. This is where I would not schedule anything.

🌮 Saturday is the night you go out

Fuego Azteca is on County Road 72 in Fraser, open Saturdays 10:00 am to 10:30 pm, everything cooked fresh to order. Close, unfussy, and it does not care that your hair is still wet. Alternative: Elevation Pizza in Fraser, house-made dough and San Marzano sauce, dine in or take back to the cabin.

🔥 Firepit and the A-Frame night

Outside for the stars, inside for the board games. Fraser averages 287 nights a year below freezing, so this is not a lingering-in-a-t-shirt situation. Ten good minutes under the sky, then back to the fire.

🍳 No alarm, big breakfast

Sunday should feel different from Saturday. Cook the rest of the eggs, run the last load of laundry, drink coffee slowly on the patio if the sun is out.

📦 Pack the car, then check out

Checkout is before 10:00 AM. Load everything first so the rest of the day has no deadline attached to it. Sweep the loft for chargers, shovel the walk if it snowed, done.

⛸ Pick exactly one

• The Icebox Ice Rink at the Fraser Valley Sports Complex: an NHL sized covered outdoor rink, open year round for public skating. Covered means weather is not an excuse.
• Colorado Adventure Park in Fraser for daylight tubing, with two magic carpet lifts so nobody walks back up.
• Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center, about 8 miles out and roughly 15 minutes: 82.5 km of groomed track across 50 trails, with about 6 miles open to dogs, which matters if yours came along.

One. Not two. Sunday is not the day to get greedy.

🍳 The last real meal

Sharky's Eatery in Fraser does breakfast and lunch and is where you go for a hearty southwestern breakfast at a time of day that is nobody's business. Alternative: Randi's Irish Grill and Pub in downtown Winter Park, local Colorado beef and lamb, produce from Morales Farms in Granby.

🛝 Free and five minutes

The Rendezvous Event Center in Hideaway Park keeps a free sledding hill running through the winter. It costs nothing, takes half an hour, and sends everyone home tired. Downtown Winter Park is 5 to 11 minutes from the cabin.

⛽ Fill up and go

Gas at the Sinclair on Market Street in Fraser, water bottles topped off, and out by four so the drive home stays sane. Denver is about 71 miles and roughly an hour and a half when everything cooperates.
