Winter ยท Weekend itinerary

The Ski Weekend

Two mornings of first chair and two nights of a wood stove doing the heavy lifting. The A-Frame sits 10 to 12 minutes from the Winter Park Resort base, and that gap is the whole trick: you sleep later, you drive less, and the day ends in a warm room instead of a parking lot. This is the weekend I actually run.

๐Ÿš— Friday: arrival is the first event

4:30โ€“5:00 PM

๐Ÿ”‘ Get in the door before you get hungry

Check-in is after 4:00 PM and it is keypad entry, so nobody is waiting on you and you are not waiting on anybody. Bags inside first. Skis and boots go straight to the entry so they are dry and warm by morning.

  • Boots, gloves, helmets: entry, not the car.
  • Wood stove lit now, not later. It takes a while to win.

5:00โ€“5:30 PM

๐Ÿ›’ The one grocery run

Safeway in Fraser is under a mile away, under 5 minutes, open 6 am to 11 pm daily, with a deli and an in-store Starbucks. Do the whole weekend in one trip. Friday dinner, two breakfasts, sandwich stuff for the lift line, and more water than you think you need. Fraser sits around 8,600 to 8,800 feet and the mountain tops out at 12,060.

5:30โ€“6:30 PM

๐Ÿ”ฅ A-Frame setup

Fire going. Music on. Drinks poured. Gear in the entry. Lights low. This block has no productive purpose and it is the most important hour of the weekend. Somebody claims the couch. Somebody discovers the loft. Let it happen.

6:30โ€“8:00 PM

๐Ÿณ Cook the first night

I would actually cook Friday. Do not immediately go to dinner. The kitchen is full, the table seats six, and the drive out and back is an hour of your night for food you could make better with the fire going. Something one-pot. The grill is out there too if the shovel has been used recently.

8:00โ€“9:30 PM

๐ŸŽฒ The A-Frame night

Board games are in the cabin. So is a smart TV, and I will not judge you. But the A-frame ceiling and a fire is a better show than most of what is streaming.

9:30โ€“10:00 PM

โœ… Lay it out now, thank yourself at 7

  • Every layer out on the couch, in order.
  • Water bottles filled and in the fridge.
  • Passes and goggles in one jacket pocket. One.
  • If you are renting, book online in advance. Winter Park's own rental pages say advance booking is how you get the best price, and Winter Park and Ikon pass holders get up to 35% off booking ahead.

โ›ท Saturday: the big one

6:45โ€“7:20 AM

โ˜• Quiet kitchen

Pod coffee maker, eggs, out the door. Nobody is talking yet and that is correct.

7:20โ€“7:45 AM

๐Ÿš™ Drive down valley

10 to 12 minutes to the resort base. For the 2026-27 season, lifts spin at 8:00 AM on Saturdays and Sundays from December 5, 2026 through April 4, 2027. Being parked at 7:45 is the entire reason you stayed in Fraser.

8:00โ€“11:45 AM

๐Ÿ” Winter Park side first

23 lifts, 171 trails, and wide-open terrain across Winter Park and Mary Jane, plus Vasquez Ridge, Eagle Wind, and The Cirque. The resort has run continuously since 1940. Warm up on the front side while the light is flat, then go find the good stuff.

11:45 AMโ€“12:15 PM

๐Ÿฅช Ski through lunch

Eat the sandwich you made last night, standing up, at a picnic table. Twenty minutes. Lift lines thin out exactly when everyone else sits down for a full lunch, and that is the window you are buying.

12:15โ€“3:15 PM

๐ŸŽฟ Mary Jane afternoon

Bumps if your knees still like you. Parsenn Bowl if they do not: the longest run here is 4.9 miles and it is very hard to be in a bad mood on it. Vertical drop is 3,060 feet, so pace the legs.

3:15โ€“4:15 PM

๐Ÿบ The deck

Derailer Bar is on the second floor of West Portal Station right at the base, with a south-facing deck built for watching people finish their last run. Bloody marys are the signature. Alternative: Vertical Bistro in the Village, small plates and a long beer list, if the deck is a scrum.

4:15โ€“4:45 PM

๐ŸŽ’ Leave the gear, take the people

Every Winter Park base rental shop offers free overnight storage steps from the Gondola. Use it. Renters especially: there is no reason to haul wet skis up and down the valley twice. Then drive home, 10 to 12 minutes.

4:45โ€“6:15 PM

๐Ÿšฟ Cabin reset

Showers in shifts. Wet layers into the washer/dryer so Sunday starts dry. Feet up. Restock the stove. This is where I would not schedule anything.

6:30โ€“8:30 PM

๐Ÿฝ Saturday is the night you go out

Solstice Bistro in the Fraser Marketplace is open Wednesday through Sunday, serving 4:30 to 9:00, with reservations taken until 8:00 and happy hour 4:30 to 5:30. They call it elevated classics from resort towns around the globe, which is a fair description of a menu that knows exactly what a ski day does to an appetite. Alternative: Tabernash Tavern, a New American room and wine bar going since 2008, known for prime dry-aged steaks.

If everyone wants a real drink, The Lift runs free year-round between Winter Park Resort, downtown Winter Park, Fraser, and Granby, and the nearest stop is one house north of the cabin. Nobody has to be the driver.

8:30โ€“10:00 PM

๐Ÿชต Firepit, if you can stand up

Clear night, cold air, and a dark lot of aspens and pines with nobody in it. Fraser averages 287 nights a year below freezing, so dress like you mean it and stay out ten minutes longer than is comfortable.

๐ŸŒ„ Sunday: one thing, then home

7:30โ€“8:45 AM

๐Ÿณ Slow breakfast

Sunday should not feel like Saturday. Big breakfast at the table, last load of laundry, second coffee on the patio if the sun is on it.

8:45โ€“9:45 AM

๐Ÿ“ฆ Pack the car before you check out

Checkout is before 10:00 AM. Load everything now, snow shovel the walk if it needs it, do one lap through the loft for phone chargers. Then the rest of the day is yours with nothing hanging over it.

10:00 AMโ€“1:30 PM

โ›ท Half day, one pace slower

Lifts are open at 8:00 on Sundays too, so a 10:00 start is a deliberate choice, not a failure. Ski until 1:30 and stop while it is still fun. Alternative if the legs are done: Devil's Thumb Ranch Nordic Center is about 5 miles out, 10 to 15 minutes, with nearly 120 km of groomed skate and classic trails in the Ranch Creek valley. USA Today readers have voted it the top cross-country resort in North America in six of the last seven years.

1:45โ€“2:45 PM

๐Ÿ• Late lunch, no rush

Hernando's Pizza Pub has been tossing pizza in Winter Park since 1967, under more than 35,000 decorated dollar bills covering the walls. Alternative: Fuego Azteca in Fraser, open from 10:00 am, everything cooked fresh to order.

2:45โ€“3:30 PM

โ›ฝ The unglamorous fifteen minutes

  • Collect stored gear from the base shop.
  • Fill up at the Sinclair on Market Street in Fraser.
  • Water bottles topped off for the pass.

3:30โ€“4:00 PM

๐Ÿ‘‹ Roll out

Leave by four so the drive home stays sane. Denver is about 71 miles and roughly an hour and a half in clean conditions, and Sunday afternoon is not always clean conditions.
